The Manning Valley Anglican College Library provides a collection of current resources, catering for students’ and teachers’ needs. The school library endeavours to provide a supportive and well resourced learning centre that promotes information literacy, encourages social awareness and fosters life-long learning. The Library is available to students, staff and parents.
Students are welcome to borrow when the Library is open, as well as in arranged times during class visits.
It is important to a child's intellectual and linguistic development that all children have a variety of books to read at home, as reading increases their language and cognitive skills. Parents can encourage this from an early age by regularly reading with their children, discussing their stories and encouraging visits to their local libraries.
Opening Hours
The Library opens at 8.30am Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday for students to return their borrowed books, or for Senior Secondary school students to conduct their research or print off assignments.
The Library is also open during 2nd lunchtime.
Computer games, Chess, draughts, magnetics, Connect 4, animal dominos, board games and colouring in are also available for all students during 2nd lunchtime.
Lessons
All Primary level children have library lessons, which include time for borrowing and the development of information and computing skills. These lessons are conducted by the teacher librarian, in collaboration with class teachers.Lessons are designed to compliment class programs, as well as enhance students’ information literacy, appreciation of literature and computing skills.
Year 11 students receive instuction in Information Literacy Skills, completing the BOS required unit All Your Own Work.
Borrowing
Students wishing to borrow must have a library bag. This helps to protect the library books from accidental damage whilst being carried in school bags. Bags can be purchased or made with library bags made from curtain block-out materials being a good choice, as they help protect from leaking drink bottles.
Students may borrow:
| K – Yr 2 - 2 Books | Yr 3 – Yr 4 - 3 Books |
| Yr 5 – Yr 6 - 4 Books | Secondary - By negotiation |
To encourage your children as readers:
Talk about books together - make reading a shared, enjoyable activity
Discuss the meanings of stories and words
Set aside some uninterrupted time to read with your child
Listen to your child read everyday, even if only for a short time
See that there is a range of reading materials for your child at home, both fiction and non-fiction
Give books as treats and presents
Try not to let television intrude on reading time
To encourage reluctant readers, try providing comics, magazines, graphic novels, or non-fiction books, depending on their interests (football, swimming, fishing, ballet, science, animals…)
After three weeks of a book being overdue, a printout is provided to the student about any overdue items.
If parents/guardians would prefer to receive an email, please email the library to advise the librarian.
All library books must be returned (any and all overdue books are welcome!)
Damaged books - please let the librarian know. Please do not attempt to repair books at home, as professional repair materials are available in the Library.
Lost books - if the book cannot be found, payment for the book's replacement will be required.
If there are any problems or issues, please contact the Librarian by phone (6553 8844) or email to: library@mvacollege.nsw.edu.au
